Greg Labbé joins Casey from the comfort of his 110 year old home in Toronto where he is in self quarantine with his family. They discuss planning for efficiency, adapting to new processes, Greg's work, and more.

Since 2017, Greg has worked as the Lab Manager for the Graduate Program in Building Science at Ryerson University. He mainly works with students who already have degrees and work experience on their path to either a Master's of PhD degree. Greg's work consists mostly in mentoring students with practical questions about field testing buildings, some tutorials on how to use testing equipment and conduct specific ASTM standard test methods. For students doing physical research, he helps them procure, design, assemble and maintain their testing apparatus.

Karen and Cameron met playing at the Shaw Festival, which is a major non for profit theatre in Niagara on the Lake. Karen and Cameron share how they gradually planned and built a tiny home off grid in Prince Edward Island, which included living in a Yurt. They discuss how their careers in the arts has evolved with the change in lifestyle. This isn’t a story about why you should be a minimalist or live in a tiny home, this is really about a couple that finally took action to pursue their dreams. Episode includes a song from Karen's recent album "The Bayfield Sessions" featuring guest singer Alicia Toner.

Casey participates in Smart613's Green Building Tour, taking place at Beaver Barrack's hosted by Graeme Hussey Director of Housing Development at CCOC. Graeme gets into the details of the site, including the installation of the first ever multi unit Geo-Thermal System in Canada at the time. In part two of the tour, Anthony Leaning Principal Architect at CSV Architects introduces us to their first passive house for CCOC.  ​

Episode 69: Following Curiosity with Andy Cockburn

Andy is a Red Seal General Carpenter, with training and experience in restoration, traditional timber framing, drafting and design, stairs, custom housing and high-performance residential construction. He was also lucky enough to teach at the Algonquin College Perth Campus for about 15 years in the Construction Carpentry Advanced Housing Program, both part-time and full time. In 2017, he trained and earned his certification as a Passive House Consultant with the Canadian Passive House Institute. 

After years of membership with his local Home Builders’ in Perth, Ontario, Andy worked with
the Canadian Home Builders Association national office as Director of Professional
Development and Manager of Association Services. Always looking for a new challenge, Andy
is now working with Guides.co, an online knowledge sharing platform, as well as helping a
STEM mentorship program from Nova Scotia called Techsploration with a pilot program
expansion into Ontario.

Andy lives in Perth, Ontario with his wife of 24 years and their 2 teenage kids.

​Heather graduated from the Industrial Design program at Carleton University in 2014. Failing to land a design job she decided to pursue one of her creative passions which was bringing new life to discarded materials. With her University degree and hands on experience growing up with a father in construction in her hometown of Coldwater, she took a part time job in Ottawa and in her off time focused on building her business.

She started by working in a small cellar in her apartment she often refers to as the “dungeon” and has since upgraded to a much larger shop where she does everything from sandwich boards, a giant connect 4, 7’ Tall Easter Eggs to complete redesigns for retail clients. Born and raised in Canmore, Alberta, Mark moved to Ottawa to pursue his studies in architecture before working for his father in law as an energy advisor. He met his wife Megan while studying and not long after attaining jobs in their fields, they decided to stop what they were doing,  quit and travel the world. Mark shares how their travels inspired the design of their current passive house and provides fresh insights on how homes should work, where the industry is headed and lots more. In this Podcast Casey interviews Michael Peixoto, husband, father, professor, soccer coach and award wining principal architect at ARCA-VERDE architecture inc, he talks about his own 2,600 square foot Passive House, he and his wife Robin Peixoto (principal interior designer with the firm Parallel 45) designed and moved into with their two daughters in 2017.

In this podcast Michael talks about the business and how he got into architecture, what success means to him, changes in the industry, juggling his family commitments and so much more.
