Jerry supports his son's passion but is growing tired or early morning wake up call's, so he's called in the expert.
What is your STC Rating?
In short, STC gives you a rough idea of how much sound a wall, for example, might stop.
STC is the most common sound reduction measurement in use. As common as this measurement is, it is quite limited and should not be totally relied upon for real world soundproofing expectations. Sound Transmission Class (STC ) is an integer rating of how well a building partition attenuates airbourne sound.
The carpenter in the script mentions an STC rating of 60 after the bedroom wall renovation is completed, (see the charts below) STC rating does not equal dBa) and STC does not increase exponentially, and for reference the Ontario Building Code requires a minimum STC of 50. Unfortunately Jerry will probably still hear his son playing the guitar but with less sound transmission he just may be able to fall back to sleep again.
