The Conscious Builder Show – How Do I Find The Sub-Trades I Need?

How do I find the sub-trades I need?

Whether you are a contractor that is just starting up or a home owner that is managing your own project, a good place to start is your local home builders association. Here in Ottawa we have GOHBA which stands for Greater Ottawa Home Builders Association. The association should have a code of ethics that needs to be followed which makes this a great starting point to find reputable companies.

Of course you can always ask people you know for referrals as well. Word of mouth is how we get the majority of our projects. The great thing about the construction industry is that the majority of homeowners have had to hire somebody at some point so there’s a good chance you’ll find who you’re looking for if you just ask people you trust.

Another thing to look for is client reviews. Thanks to the internet, there is no shortage of places to leave reviews for businesses. One of the most popular websites out there for residential projects is Companies can upload pictures to share their projects and clients can leave reviews and ratings. The other amazing thing about Houzz is that you can create Idea Books. When we’re working through a design with a homeowner, this is usually where we start because the homeowner can create an idea book and share it with us. Below each picture they can then add notes about what they like or dislike in the image. It’s actually quite addicting when going through the process…

For the general contractors out there, the right sub-trades can really make or break your project. Make sure your sub-trades understand your requirements for the project and understand the needs of the homeowner. My experience has shown me that every homeowner is different and their needs will not all be met the same way on every project.
